The Marpa Institute for Translation
Beginnings of Marpa Institute
Through the inspiration of the Sixteenth Gyalwa Karmapa,
Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, Marpa Institute was founded in Kathmandu, Nepal
in 1986 by Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche.
Marpa Institute was originally intended to be the Asian
branch of Kagyu Tekchen Shedra, a committee for the education of European
translators founded by Khenpo Rinpoche in France in 1978. However, from
its beginning, the Institute began accepting students from all over the
world. Because of this, the European Kagyu Tekchen Shedra Translation
Committee became the Marpa Translation Committee, affiliated with Marpa
Institute.
The Institute's mission is to further Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso
Rinpoche's work of training capable and dedicated translators. As Buddhism
continues to spread in the West, the need for translators increases with
each passing year. The fruitful practice of Dharma depends on access to
authentic sources of knowledge, both through texts—which carry the
wisdom of centuries of study and practice—and through the oral commentary
and personal guidance of qualified teachers. The courses at Marpa Institute
are designed to prepare students in both scriptural and oral translation.
Open to any student from east or west who wishes to join this long-term
project, the curriculum of the Institute offers classes designed to meet
the needs of students at all levels. Studies develop through an increasingly
complex series of texts dealing with language, practice, philosophy and
logical reasoning.
Marpa Institute Today
In the early years, classes took place at Marpa Institute
in Boudhanath, Nepal. In 1989 and 1990 classes were held at Bodhgaya,
India. Since then, classes have been held in conjunction with Rigpe Dorje
Institute, founded by His Eminence Jamgon Kongtrul III, which is located
at Pullahari Monastery near Boudhanath.
